I'm a web developer, how can I save the web from IE6?
IE6 isn't a necessary evil. If all web developers out there unite in the same effort to switch their users to safer, stabler and better browsers, we can definitely push IE6 out of the arena.
We've built this site for a single, simple reason: so your visitors can be redirected here and get a simple, comprehensive explanation in their own language why they should upgrade their browser.
How you, web developers and web designers, achieve that, is entierely up to you. However, there are already a couple of great initiatives on the net, that may help you implement a simple mechanism to motivate your visitors to abandon IE6. For example, the excellent IE6 Update tool is really easy to use and perfectly integrates with all your sites.
However, even if this website is more about content than technique, we also have a little something you can use on your pages. You don't need to install anything, it'll all be linked off of our own servers.
How does it work?
Our solution consists of just two lines:
One line to insert just before your closing </head> tag:
<!--[if lte IE 6]><link href="http://www.byebyeinternetexplorer.org/public/ie6-warning.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" /><![endif]-->Another line to insert right after your opening <body> tag (don't forget to personalize the message!):
<!--[if lte IE 6]><div class="ie6-warning"><a href="http://www.byebyeinternetexplorer.org" target="_blank">Insert a friendly message to your users here...</a></div><![endif]-->
Can I help?
Certainly! You're welcome to help any assistance would be greatly appreciated! If you find typos, orthographic or grammar mistakes in the translations, or if you would like to provide a translation in a language we do not support yet, feel free to get in touch with us by emailing translation@byebyeinternetexplorer.org.
But most of all...
Spread it, talk about it, post about it, chat about it, twit it, digg it, stumble it, make noise around it. And on top of everything: use it! It's only if all those great initiatives are used that we'll make the web a better place for us and our visitors.
